What's been irking me since the campaign ended is exactly what you touched on your last point: Ad agencies focus on short term campaigns...

Now Old Spice has hundreds of thousands of Youtube/Facebook/Twitter followers...and what's happened since the campaign? No new videos, two (not that interesting or funny) tweets and two Facebook posts (one the same as twitter)... I'm starting to wonder if they even have an ongoing strategy?

Coordination is certainly a challenge for larger companies, and I think that success needs to come from the internal departments being on the same page. If you have marketing and PR driving in separate directions, you have a recipe for fragmented, ineffective campaigns.

Ideally, I think you should aim to create an environment where different agencies can brainstorm and come up with ideas together to support each other and get the best results. I've worked on projects like that and it's great. However, that only works if the agencies aren't engaged in a turf war over who gets to do certain pieces of work. If that doesn't naturally occur, the client needs to step in and address things; again, that requires a united front internally.

Fortunately, it appears not. If the different agencies are able to work things out between each other, that could be to everyones' benefit in the long-term.
