42 Top Social Media Tips And Tools

Over the last six months or so I’ve come across hundreds of useful tips and tools online. Rather than keeping them to myself, I thought I’d share a few of them with you.

Fabulous post Dave. For those of us who are still wrestling with how best to leverage some of these tools. Plenty of homework here. For me the important thing is to stay curious. Like others, I'm not sure that Twitter is for me yet - but I'll keep dabbling and exploring. At least that way I'll have an informed view - and post like yours will really save time so thanks!

I just wanted to suggest another option under the PR/News release category. The site is called Newsvetter (yes, I created it). This site is specifically designed to reduce the volume of "news spam" hitting the inboxes of the media by giving communications professionals a better framework for sending high quality story ideas. How does it work? Instead of writing a press release, PR people complete an online vetting Q&A. The vetting Q&A is a list of key questions commonly asked by the news media when evaluating stories for publication. After completing the vetting Q&A, submissions are posted to the site and/or can be sent to specific media targets. It's a different way of doing things, but based on my initial conversations with the media, it would be welcomed.

I'm not a huge fan of microblogging, but I understand why some people might find it useful. I just get annoyed when people have IM conversations over Twitter or tell me when they're doing their laundry. More people need to learn the Ten Commandments of Twitter from Phil Whitehouse.

I found that Twitter, for example, gains value as your community grows. For me, it had limited value when I first joined. It was only when I established many connections that I realized micro-blogging's true value.
